Answers to commonly asked questions

Does my private health insurance cover my newborn’s paediatric care?

Healthy newborn babies are not classified by the hospital system as inpatients but a ‘boarder’ with their mother. Unfortunately, this means that fees for their paediatric care are not covered by private health insurance. Part of the costs of paediatric care in hospital are claimable through Medicare.

Babies who require admission to the Special Care Nursery for medical care will have part of the fees covered by the private health fund, although there will be a gap for each consultation.

There may also be fees associated with radiology and pathology investigations, if these are required.

What follow-up will my baby have after I leave the hospital?

Soon after leaving hospital you will receive an email with information about the 6 week paediatric follow-up appointment for your baby and an account for inpatient paediatric services.

Your General Practitioner plays a critical role in the ongoing care of your family. If your baby becomes unwell after discharge please contact your GP or attend a paediatric emergency department if the matter is urgent.

If you need to see Dr Ferguson after the 6 week follow-up appointment a referral from your GP will be required.
